CTV Southwestern Ontario Television began broadcasting as CKCO TV in Kitchener in 1954. Over the years the stations coverage has both expanded and contracted to where it is today covering all of southwestern Ontario from Hamilton to Windsor, from Lake Erie to Georgian Bay and the Bruce Peninsula. CTV Southwestern Ontario reaches over 1 million people each week*, and holds the distinction of being the most-watched station for both news and entertainment programming in Southwestern Ontario. In addition to its news programming, CTV Southwestern Ontario produces Provincewide and What’s Your Point?, two half-hour programs reflecting the local market area. Each has a loyal viewer following.
CTV Southwestern Ontario produces 20 hours of news per week. The station has won recognition for its newscasts, including top honours as the best local newscast by the prestigious RTNDA (Radio and Television News Directors Association). In fact, CTV Southwestern Ontario has received 9 RTNDA awards in the past 9 years. CTV Southwestern Ontario's belief in strong community involvement led to its recognition as the Television Station of the Year by the Central Ontario Association of Broadcasters in 1997. Also, in 2002 CTV Southwestern Ontario's Vice-President and General Manager received the Howard Caine Broadcaster of the Year Award at the 2002 Ontario Association of Broadcasters Awards. This award is presented to the OAB member broadcaster of Ontario who distinguished him/herself through community involvement, industry leadership, and projecting a positive image for the industry in general in the calendar year 2002. Also, our Vice-President and General Manager was recently named the Lions Club of Kitchener “2007 Citizen of the Year for Kitchener-Waterloo” for his many community contributions in our region including his work with Junior Achievement of the Waterloo Region, KW Oktoberfest, The Kitchener-Waterloo Community Foundation, Centre in the Square, Skills Canada, The United Way, Chamber of Commerce, Conestoga College, Cambridge Memorial Hospital and many more. In February 2005, the Greater Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber of Commerce recognized CTV Southwestern Ontario as Business Leader of the Year. This is awarded to a member company, which has demonstrated innovative and proactive leadership within their company or industry over the past year. Upon presenting the award, Todd Letts, President & CEO of the Greater Kitchener Waterloo Chamber said; "Business leadership is not a new phenomenon at CTV Southwestern Ontario, for more than five decades, the men and women of CTV Southwestern Ontario have played a lead role in shaping our region. When it is time for community action on the issues that are most important to our region, everyone knows you can count on CTV Southwestern Ontario."
